Sussex Wasps Results

14 - Steve Lovell (50 shots behind winner)
18 - Paul Preston (60 shots behind winner)
Report from Captain - Steve 'Sheila' Lovell
It's been another incredible weekend of mini golf at the British Open in Margate at Strokes Adventure Golf, one of the toughest and mentally demanding courses in the country. The Sussex Wasps sent three members, Nuno, Paul and Steve, who all had varying expectations. Nuno was chasing prizes, Paul looking for a great improvement from last years British Championships and Steve hoping to pit his wits against the course for the first time.
But first, there was small matter of the rain addled Players Championship. After round one, Wasps only entrant Steve found himself in the joint lead and matched up against Martin Greenhead. Martin took a four hole lead but after an inspired run of five holes in a row, Steve led by one. Martin then went back into the lead. Coming to the fifth, the last hole, Steve aced and looked like it was going to extra holes, only for Martin to do the same. Great match.
On to the Open itself, everyone was delighted to see the sun out and there it stayed for the weekend. By the end of day one, Nuno and Steve had assumed their regular position of being the same group for day two and Paul was just outside the top 18. Adam Kelly had already built up an eleven shot lead over defending champion Michael Smith, with the rest just playing catch.
Nuno, with the arrival of his wife at the course, really clicked into life and set the Wasps course record of 31 twice. Steve couldn't push on to trouble the cash placings and being comfortably in the final round, just couldn't gain the focus needed. Paul, replicating his round six performance at the 2014 World Crazy Golf Championships, hauled back three spots to make the final round.
All three Wasps had made it. Paul had achieved his goal and may feel disappointed to have finished on a 42 for 18th. Steve had a lacklustre 39 for 14th but Nuno was the star, rising to 3rd from 7th overnight and taking the bronze.
It has been a wonderful weekend and we thank Sean Homer, Marion Homer and Brenda Smith for their organisation. Also to Mark Wood, Scott Lancley and Martin Greenhead for their refereeing skills. Special mentions must go to the Wood family at Strokes for their first class course and hospitality.
