Report from Captain - Steve 'Sheila' Lovell
Sunday 12th April 2015 will go down in history as one of the finest days in the short existence of the Sussex Wasps as the club took gold in all THREE categories and added two bronze medals. Everyone played their part and the team spirit we had yesterday was amazing.
Nuno's wire to wire victory shows just what fortitude he has as well as undeniable talent. To be in that final group with the two previous winners of the Masters who were both on the charge proves he truly belongs in their company. He held his nerve to capture his first ranking event in the UK. We wish Nuno well in the Portuguese championships at the end of the month.
Captain Steve recovered from a poor start, which included his first round in the forties since the World Crazies in 2013 in a ranking event, and if it was just the last two rounds scored, he would have finished fourth. Another solid top ten finish.
Vice captain Paul continued to impress with three cracking rounds, placing him fourth before the final round. As with Steve in 2014, the pressure of playing in the penultimate got to him but this is all valuable experience and will make him a stronger player.
Derek can look back on a brilliant performance with his new putter and balls. Being partnered with Derek in the last round, I can see for myself that he has got a certain something and I expect him to kick on from this, looking to push for a top twenty ranking.
Andy should be given respect for even making the event, playing in between nightshifts on a course he had only first seen at 9.15am. Such determination to just want to play completely gets my admiration. Andy did his best and won his category. Great stuff.
Steve's annual visit for the Masters yielded his best ever result of 22nd. He got better and didn't want to tournament to end as he set a personal best of 42 in the final round. Having been a complete novice two years ago, Steve is actually turning out to be quiet a handy putter.
Harry made his strokeplay debut and averaged a fraction over fifty for the day. I'm delighted that Harry made three aces throughout the day, including the volcano. Hopefully, we can see Harry at some more events where he will become stronger and learn from more experienced opponents.
Overall, the Club Champs is still my highlight but yesterday run this a close second. You made the new entrants very welcome and informed them about the club and the BMGA. Well done everyone. You're a credit to our club.
